Taiwan is one of the culinary centers of East Asia, with a range of exotic and sometimes surprising dishes. Staple dishes include Beef Noodle Soup which represents comfort food Taiwan-style. Often accompanied by an icy ‘boba’ green tea, many Taiwanese end a hard working day with this meal. Minced Pork on Rice is another Taiwanese favorite where minced pork belly is served on white rice, sometimes with the addition of an egg and slices of daikon radishes.
Dried shrimp is a popular ingredient, as are peanuts and sticky rice served in small portions. Chili sauce is commonly used, but not in abundance since the Taiwanese are not overly fond of highly spicy dishes. Oyster pancakes or omelets are another delicious regional favorite, where fried eggs and sautéed vegetables are combined with oysters and tapioca starch and red sauce. These are often served as a late night appetizer at street markets.
Taiwanese meatballs and beef rolls are finger food at its finest. The rolls are a combination of crispy green onion pancakes wrapped around braised beef along with pickles and cilantro. The Meatballs are dumpling-like balls containing minced meat, shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots. Delicious!
